Lately I’ve been paying particular attention to the music that’s been playing around The Real Adventure as I walk around. There are a few pockets of people with speakers on their machines, and even a pink radio gaffer-taped to a partition, but there are lots more who prefer to do their listening on headphones: heads down, working hard; in their private listening zone. I got to thinking – what is our collective soundtrack? What’s keeping us nodding all day?

What is the real sound of The Real Adventure?

I set out to create a snapshot of what people were listening to at one particular moment in time all across the office. I didn’t want a list of favourites, just the tune that was playing at that moment. An honest portrait of what was filling people’s ears at 3:37pm on a Friday in mid-January. I sent out a mail asking the question and got a surprisingly large number of responses, then put the songs together in a playlist on Spotify.

What are my findings?

Well there is a diverse selection, from New Folk, to Deep House, to Hipster Electronica, to Pop, to Chamber music. But that’s what I expected. What I didn’t expect was that I’d enjoy it so much! I feel like I’ve got a tiny bit closer to understanding the musical culture of The Real Adventure through this exercise, and I’ve been sent off on quite a few interesting musical avenues from this list.

So here it is, the sound of The Real Adventure at 3:37pm on a Friday, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Glad to hear classical music in the TRA office isn’t dead. Has anyone (since me) enjoyed the soothing sounds of BBC Radio 3′s Choral Evensong on Wednesday afternoons? Always guaranteed to get someone to say “ooh, it sounds all Christmassy in here”
